QUOTE(Anne Elliot @ Aug 10 2018, 06:08 PM) *
Got it, thanks.
I really feel sorry for her. Not that I condone her , by all means, but here's something to consider-- women back then if not married-- are somewhat doomed. I don't know about her family's wealth-- but even unmarried women from good families also were likely to be destitute and shunned. Without her leg, she lost her career, her beauty ( I don't think so, but I have the luxury of modern views) which is her commodity, to make a living as an actress, to be a wife.

What Terry did was truly noble. She needed someone to care for her: financially, physically ( get around, go to Dr's, etc) to survive. But not emotionally-- that is the one thing Terry could not provide ---perhaps that's what finally killed her. If she got sick or an infection recovering from the complications of her amputation-- it's hard to thrive and survive without love.

Terry is just amazing, noble man to the end. He saw that he needed to be by Susanna and did what most people wouldn't do, but ... either way, even if he left her for Candy, Susanna's fate was doomed.

Just my two cents.

Completely agree with your view! As painful as it is to think about, I was thinking exactly the same. We do look at the situation with modern eyes, and we always debate as to what if Candy and Terry talked to find a solution, rather than break up so abruptly. But I don't think there was any other solution than Terry remaining to care for Susanna. In fact even if emotionally he never felt love for her in the way a man would feel for a woman, still he remained by her side in such a way that she actually did find some success as a scriptwriter for the theatre (am I right? I think I read that in one of the translations). So in the end, she died young and prematurely but I don't think she lived for all those years locked in an apartment which means that Terry helped her overcome her tragic misfortune even psychologically.

I just read this addendum to your post! I totally agree that Terry was an amazing and noble man! What he did, sacrificing his love, a potential happy future with the woman he loved, to take care of woman he didn't even love is utterly selfless. It's true that you won't find a modern man who will make the same decision as Terry! smile.gif

I'm afraid I have to disagree here. Even back in that time era, there was no reason why Terry and Candy couldn't have taken care of the Chipie's financial needs and give her a comfortable life, without Terry being "with" her in the role of a husband. Heck, Candy's a nurse. She's probably more qualified than Terry to care for Chipie with her lost leg. And if Candy asked, Uncle William would probably buy a house for Chipie to live in for the rest of her life, with a staff of servants to boot. I think the reason why I feel no sympathy for her is because what she demanded wasn't a way to not fall into destitute. What she demanded was that Terry gives up the woman he loved, his soulmate, to be bounded to HER. That makes her selfish to the tee, and manipulative, and my sympathy thus lies with him and Candy and not her.

She basically was ok with destroying both Terry and Candy's happiness to have his person be her boyfriend/husband/whatever, even if she couldn't have his love. What kind of selfish evil monster does that?

Ah, we need that bad guy/girl in all stories--- without them, no conflict, no tragedy. And such bad fates ( often caused by people) are part of life. But yes, Susannah is a weak, insecure character. I still have pity for her, as she probably wasn't happy... but had made Terry and Candy all that more stronger, noble, beautiful. I like to think they have found happiness. At least Candy did. smile.gif

Well girls, i see susana´s issue as the LOVE DECLARATION OF TERRY FOR CANDY!!!

Candy said so clear that she and terry couldn´t be happy while Susana was alive but with her problem to walk. Susana didn´t loose her leg in CCFS. She doesn´t have the possibility of walk!! and she has that problem for trying to save Terry´s life. So for terry and candy is just what must be done!!! to try to make Susana happy as a reward!! terry and candy are good persons!!!And at the end they get what they deserve!! to be together in avon, smelling the daffodils!! that is CCFS end!!! susana is in their past!!!!!

And yes dear Eleanna, Susana worked writing small and not important theater plays, and also was a narrator at the theater!!!

Dear Anne if you don´t know it, Shakespeare had a daughter called Susana, and Nagita created that character to be the most brilliant actress, probably she was the couple of Terry´s in the initial plot... but it doesn´t work out well... nor in the manga, anime or novels... and at the end Nagita decided to kill her!! that was the big surprise of CCFS!!!
