Ex-Actress shot outside
theater
New York, January
29
A young woman is fighting for her life today after a shooting
that left her family distraught and the theatre world in shock, Paradise News
reports.
Former actress Susanna Marlowe was seriously injured Monday
outside the Stratford Theater, when a woman shot her 3 times.
Miss
Marlowe was leaving the theatre after the end of the matinee show along with
fiancé Terrence Grandchester and her mother, Hillary. The party was on their way
to the Waldorf Astoria, where an intimate family celebration for Mr.
Grandchester’s birthday had been planned.
A crowd of about 40 well
wishers was waiting for Mr. Grandchester’s exit, who spent a few minutes
accepting flowers and birthday cards, and signing autographs. Miss Marlowe was
being helped into the waiting car by her mother when the woman broke out of the
crowd and approached her slowly then took a gun out of her bag and shot her
rapidly 3 times at the back at close range.
Onlookers’ accounts say the
woman, who was dressed all in black and had her face half covered, would have
continued shooting if a man near her had not disarmed her. Theater security
rushed to his assistance and detained the woman until police arrived a few
minutes later. She was then taken to the police station where she is being held
for questioning.
Miss Marlowe was given first aid assistance by Miss
Eileen Golden, 25, who identified herself as a nurse. Miss Golden, who was part
of the crowd of well-wishers, tried to stop the bleeding while Mr. Grandchester
who rushed by his fiancée’s side tried to keep her from loosing consciousness.
Miss Marlowe was then driven to St Joseph’s Hospital where she remains in
critical condition.
The 21-year-old actress was working for the
Stratford Company since she was 13. She was an extra for 4 years in plays such
as, “Richard the III” and “Midsummer Night’s Dream” before she took the part of
one of the witches in “Macbeth”. She then took part in the next season’s “King
Lear” as Cordelia. The following year she was casted as Juliet, in “Romeo and
Juliet”, a role she never played as she was seriously injured in a freak
accident days before the premiere, which forced doctors to amputate her right
leg to save her life. She has not worked since.
Miss Marlowe was engaged
to Mr. Grandchester, who was to be Romeo to her Juliet in the 1914 play, since
last year. Reports that the couple was about to announce their plans for a
spring wedding have not been confirmed.
Details about the woman who
opened fire or her motive have not yet been released to the media. She remains
in custody and is expected to appear at court tomorrow.

Actress condition remains
critical
New York, January
30
Susanna Marlowe remains in critical condition at St.
Joseph’s hospital today, two days after she was seriously injured in a shooting
outside the Stratford Theater.
Doctors performed two difficult
operations on her in as many days in order to remove two out of the three
bullets that injured her, one from her right shoulder and another one that had
destroyed part of her right lung. A third bullet, reported to be near her heart
has yet to be removed.
“It will be a much more difficult procedure to
remove the third bullet than the two we have performed so far” Dr. Wander of St.
Joseph’s hospital told Paradise News. “Miss Marlowe is unconscious and very weak
still and we are not sure she will survive a third major surgery so quickly. We
are doing what we can to keep her condition stable but with one lung partly
destroyed and another with limited functionality due to the bullet’s position
it’s quite a challenge”.
Miss Marlowe’s family is keeping vigil by her
side. Friends and colleagues from the Stratford Company have also visited to
offer their support to the family. “She is holding on, we are hopeful she will
make it, she is a strong young lady” director Robert Hathaway said following a
brief visit to the actress yesterday.
Also vigil outside the hospital
keeps Miss Marlowe’s number one fan. Mr. Cy Berfred of Jersey, arrived at St.
Joseph’s hospital soon after she was taken there last Monday evening and has not
left since. “I will remain here as long as it takes; I want to be here and watch
her walk out of the hospital in good health”.
Miss Marlowe’s promising
acting career with the Stratford Company was cut short 2 years ago when she had
a leg amputated following an accident at the theatre. She has not walked since.
Absent from the hospital for most of Tuesday was Miss Marlowe’s fiancé,
Terrence Grandchester who is in close co-operation with the police regarding the
investigation of the shooting. Police have denied reports that he is considered
a suspect. “We are grateful for all the assistance he is offering on the issue”
a police official told Paradise News, but he would give no more details.
The assailant has been identified as one Agatha Barnaby, a 25 year old
shop owner’s daughter from Brooklyn. Miss Barnaby appeared before a judge,
Tuesday however, even after extensive questioning she has been adamantly
refusing to confess her motives for the assault. Paradise News sources present
at the hearing report that she showed little to no remorse for her actions or
about the distress she caused to Miss Marlowe’s family, on the contrary she
seemed to be in good spirits.
Police will continue questioning Miss
Barnaby before charging her with attempted manslaughter later today.

WORLD EXCLUSIVE: Jealousy behind actress shooting
New York, January
31
Agatha Barnaby, the woman accused for grievously injuring
actress Susanna Marlowe by shooting her 3 times Monday evening has been charged
with attempted manslaughter. She is still held at the police station downtown
Manhattan. She will be moved to prison tomorrow awaiting trial.
Further
questioning by police failed to make Miss Barnaby confirm why she attacked Miss
Marlowe. However, Paradise News can exclusively reveal that jealousy might have
been her prime motive.
A source close to Miss Barnaby who has asked to
remain anonymous has confirm to us that Miss Barnaby is an avid admirer of Mr.
Grandchester and that she probably shot Miss Marlowe in a jealous rage.
“Agy absolutely adores Terry; her whole life lately revolves around him.
She has been going to the theatre to watch him then wait outside for his exit to
see him at every chance. Frankly, her behavior had been worrisome lately”.
Theater security has also confirmed to us that Miss Barnaby was a
regular at the Theater particularly when Mr. Grandchester was to perform. She
had been noted to wait many times in all types of weather outside the theater
for his exit and had talked to him on a number of occasions in the past. Miss
Barnaby’s appearances had become more frequent in the past couple of months
however and Mr. Grandchester himself had asked security to be aware of her
presence as well as to be informed of it himself.
Paradise News have
also confirmed with sources close to Miss Marlowe that the actress was aware of
Miss Barnaby’s affection for her fiancé and the two clashed outside the theatre
two weeks prior to the assault. Miss Marlowe accused Miss Barnaby of “stalking
her fiancé” and ordered her removal from theatre premises. Miss Barnaby was very
upset and called Miss Marlowe a number of names including “chipie”
*.
“Agy was very upset after that, she probably snapped” said the same
source close to Miss Barnaby.
Following conclusion of its own
investigation on the issue, Paradise News have contacted the police and have
presented them with all evidence gathered and is in full co-operation with them
to solve the case.
“We will definitely look into this” a police official
told us. “We are grateful to Paradise News for their assistance on this matter”.
Mr. Grandchester is also in close contact with the police to assist with
the investigation. He also met with reporters briefly outside the hospital
yesterday** but he wouldn’t comment on Miss Barnaby. He informed reporters that
Miss Marlowe is still unconscious and in critical condition but that she spent a
quiet night.
In an unprecedented move he also allowed Mr. Cy Berfred,
Miss Marlowe’s No 1 fun who keeps vigil outside the hospital, to visit her. Mr.
Grandchester, who reports say looked amused by Mr. Berfred’s constant presence
there, asked doctors and hospital security to allow him to see Miss Marlowe
briefly.
“I shall forever be grateful to him for this wonderful gift. But
to see her just lie there, lifeless…” said Mr. Berfred, following his visit to
the patient unable to control his emotions. He vowed to continue his vigil until
Miss Marlowe is allowed out of the hospital.
*Mindful that its readers might not be familiar with
such word, Paradise News researched it and can confirm it’s a French one,
meaning: vixen (quarrelsome, shrewish or malicious woman) or minx (promiscuous).
The word can also be used as slang for ‘prostitute’.
**Paradise News
would like to apologize to their faithful readers for being unable to provide
them with direct quotes from Mr. Grandchester from his meeting with the media.
Our reporter was experiencing a major hot flush accompanied by worrisome
palpitations at the time Mr. Grandchester was present and was unable to talk to
him. She was taken to the emergency room briefly where she was advised by
doctors to “take it easy” for a few days.

Actress dies as assailant jailed
New
York, February 1
Susanna Marlowe, the former actress who was shot
outside the Stratford Theater last Monday, has died. She was 21.
Miss
Marlow was seriously injured when Agatha Barnaby opened fire and shot her 3
times at her back Monday evening. She had already undergone extensive surgery to
remove 2 bullets one from her right shoulder and another from her right lung.
Doctors had initially vetoed a third operation for fears she would not make it
through it but were forced to operate when they realized the third bullet had
started affecting her heart’s function. Miss Marlowe passed away during the
emergency operation Thursday afternoon.
“We did all we could to save her
but her heart was very weak. She suffered a massive heart attack during surgery”
a doctor present during the operation informed Paradise News.
Her
mother, Hillary Marlowe was at the hospital when Susanna was taken to the
operation room. Susanna’s fiancé was informed of the emergency surgery and
rushed to the hospital where he arrived only minutes before her death was
announced.
A somber looking Mr. Grandchester was driven away from the
hospital about an hour later along with a visibly distraught Mrs. Marlowe.
Through his agent, Andrew Hartman, Mr. Grandchester asked the media for privacy.
“This is a difficult time for Susanna’s family. Her mother is devastated. Terry
hopes the media will spare them any intrusion”.
In a brief statement the
Stratford Theater Company said: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Miss
Marlowe and extend our sincere condolences to Mr. Grandchester and Mrs. Marlowe
for their tragic lose. Our thoughts are with them”. The Company suspended all
shows for 10 days.
Details of the funeral have not yet been released but
Paradise News has learned that Miss Marlowe’s body will be taken to her hometown
of Defiance, Ohio, for a private burial.
Meanwhile, Agatha Barnaby, the
woman who shot the Miss Marlowe, reportedly laughed when she heard of Miss
Marlowe’s passing and commented that “she got what she really deserved”.
“She was really a small, egocentric and spiteful person” a source
claimed to have heard Miss Barnaby say.
Police informed the media that on
news of Miss Marlowe’s death, Miss Barnaby confessed her motives were jealousy
and anger as Paradise News revealed yesterday in a world exclusive report.
Miss Barnaby admitted to being besotted with Mr. Grandchester and very
jealous of Miss Marlowe for being his fiancé. She also confirmed that she and
Miss Marlowe quarreled recently about this matter and Miss Marlowe had order
theater security to not allow Miss Barnaby “anywhere near Theater property or
her fiance”. Miss Barnaby confessed this infuriated her and she decided to
“teach Miss Marlowe a lesson”.
Miss Barnaby was jailed Thursday awaiting
trial. Following Miss Marlowe’s death her charge was changed from attempted
manslaughter to manslaughter. She faces up to 15 years in federal prison if
convicted.
Security was tight during Miss Barnaby’s move to jail as Mr.
Cy Berfred, Miss Marlowe’s number one fan, vowed to “kill that cow for cutting
my Susanna’s life short” shortly after Miss Marlowe’s death was announced. Mr.
Berfred, who was keeping vigil outside the hospital since Monday night, was
inconsolable as he left his post following the sad news as he didn’t “want to
see Susanna come out of the hospital in a box”.
“I was expecting her to
have a full recovery and be her old bouncy self again soon” he said visibly
upset. “Now she will go to earth… to be eaten by worms and all kinds of creepy
things… This is unbearable!”
Paradise News extends their sincere
condolences to Miss Marlowe’s family.

Shot actress laid to rest in hometown
Defiance, Ohio February
5
Close relatives and friends paid their last respects to former
actress Susanna Marlowe who was killed last week by a crazed fan of her fiancé,
Terry Grandchester.
Miss Marlowe was laid to rest Tuesday, in her
hometown Defiance, Ohio after a simple 30-minute ceremony that took place at St.
Susanna and Gertrude church, in a suburb of Defiance.
Dressed in a beige
lace dress, she lay serenely in a white coffin adorned with wild thistles, her
favorite flowers.
Present at the service was Mr. Cy Berfred who had
travelled from New York with intentions to stand outside the church during his
favorite actress’s funeral. He was invited to attend the service however by Mr.
Grandchester, when the latter was informed about Mr. Berfred’s presence outside
the church.
Mr. Berfred was inconsolable during the service but it was
the actual burial in the adjacent to the church cemetery, that was proved too
much for him and he had to have first aid assistance as he fainted when the
white coffin was lowered to the ground.
Following the burial and after
making sure Mr. Berfred was OK, Mr. Grandchester met briefly with 5 fans who had
gathered outside the church to offer their condolences before being driven to
the Marno Hotel, in downtown Defiance where he and Mrs. Marlowe held a small
wake.
Present at the funeral and the wake was also Mr. Robert Hathaway,
president of the Stratford Theater Company who announced that shows have been
suspended for a week in memory of Miss Marlowe. Hamlet will be played by
understudy Joshua Romenholt, as Mr. Grandchester will be on bereavement leave
for further 5 weeks.
Paradise News can reveal Mr. Grandchester will be
comforted by friends in Chicago, for which he left soon after the funeral.

Obituary
Susanna Marlowe
1895-1916
Susanna Marlowe died last week in what turn out to be a
jealousy attack by a besotted fan of her fiancé Terrence Grandchester. She
fought bravely against the bullets in her chest for 3 days, but lost her battle
during an emergency operation Thursday.
The only child of Hubert and
Hillary Marlowe, Susanna Gertrude Marlowe was born, June 29th, 1895 in Defiance,
Ohio, where she spent a quiet childhood. According to Hillary, “she showed a
remarkable talent in acting at an early age and a determination to succeed and
get what she wanted, unlike any I had ever known”. It was after the family moved
to New York in 1904 that her passion for the stage blossomed. The move came
following a money laundering scandal in the Bank of Defiance, in which Mr.
Marlowe was working. Details of the scandal were never made public but Mr.
Marlowe’s, along with 5 other names was involved.
Following Hubert’s
death in 1906 from a mysterious disease, Susanna decided to pursue a career on
stage and fully supported by her mother, she took private acting lessons. She
joined the Stratford Company when she was 13 where she worked as an extra,
taking part in plays such as, “Richard the III” and “Midsummer Night’s
Dream” for 4 seasons. In 1913 she was cast as one of the witches in
“Macbeth” in the Stratford’s production of the play. She was then chosen
to understudy Mrs. Cecilia Dartworth as Cordelia in the next season’s “King
Lear”, a role she came to play permanently after Mrs. Dartworth left the
company to have a family.
It was during this time that she met Terry
Grandchester who played the King of France in the same play, for which he
received the Year’s Most Talented Newcomer award at the Theater Honors ceremony.
Later that year, in a surprised move by director Robert Hathaway to cast
relatively unknown actors for the main roles, Miss Marlowe was cast as Juliet,
to Mr. Grandchester’s Romeo in “Romeo and Juliet”, a role she will most
probably be remembered for, even though she never had the chance to play. Days
before the play were due to premiere, she was seriously injured when a headlight
crushed on her during rehearsals.
At the time it was thought that the
light would have fallen on Terry Grandchester and would most probably have
claimed his life had Miss Marlowe not interfere to push him out of its way.
Following an enquiry into the accident, however, it was determined that had she
not interfered it was unlikely that either of them would have gotten seriously
hurt: the light fell three feet away from where Mr. Grandchester was standing.
Miss Marlowe had not worked ever since her accident. Last year she
turned down an offer (and a well paid contract) from a well known pharmaceutical
company to prepare a prosthetic limp for her in exchange for her services to
promoting the product, saying she “would not cash in on her disability”.
Miss Marlowe and Mr. Grandchester got engaged shortly after her accident
in 1914 and have been together ever since.
Unfortunately, any plans the
couple had for a wedding were cut short with Susanna’s untimely death.
The End
