In Dreams He Came

By Ivonne Rivera

It had been two weeks after Anthony’s death. The whole family had not been the same, including, Candy. Candy had come out the worst than anybody else. Of course, after being a witness to someone’s death…especially, if it is somebody you love. Candy had kept herself in her room and had not eaten anything since the accident. The first few days, she was in bed with a high fever. The fever had gone, but it had left her weak. Her hair wasn’t their usual curls. They were just plain and tangled. Her skin started to lose its color, becoming paler every day. Her emerald eyes didn’t shine as they use to. They were now dull and red from tears. She began to get skinnier every day too. Her bones started to show through out her body. Candy sat on her bed, her arms wrapped around her legs. She was rocking herself back and forth. There was a knock on the door, Candy didn’t bother to look up or say something. She just kept rocking herself.

"Candy, I’ve brought you some food," Archie said putting the tray on top of a table, in front of Candy’s bed.

"I’m not hungry," Candy replied, resting her head on her knees. Archie sat down next to her and looked her over.

"Candy…it hurts me to see you in this way."

"Then don’t look at me," she hissed at him.

Archie was hurt. He looked at her painfully, but was shocked to see a tear running down Candy’s cheek. "You’re still upset about the accident…then, I’ll leave you alone." He stood and started walking towards the door.

"Archie, I’m sorry for treating you as if you were nothing," Candy apologize walking towards him.

"You don’t have to apologize, I know how you feel," Archie said and took Candy in his arms, hugging her tightly. He couldn’t believe how skinny Candy has gotten.

"Oh Archie," Candy whispered, closing her eyes. She missed so much, the feeling of warmth from someone else against her body.

Archie stepped away from Candy. "I have to go and attend something very important. But when I come back, your plate must be empty," he told her giving her a smile, then walked out of her room.

Candy just stared at her food then looked at the window. The curtains were closed, but from a small crack…Candy could tell that it was still morning. She didn’t dare to open the curtains. From where her window stood was Anthony’s rose garden, giving her a perfect and a painful view. She let out a long sigh and climbed in her bed. She felt so weak and tired that he couldn’t keep her eyes open any longer. Soon, everything became dark. "Candy…Candy…" a familiar voice echoed in Candy’s ears. Candy blinked a couple of times and rubbed her eyes. She noticed that somebody had opened the curtains. Bright light shined through the room. Candy got up and tiptoed towards the window. She looked out and was shocked at what she saw. Instead of seeing a dead rose garden, she saw a beautiful garden in bloom. A shiver ran down her spine and she immediately closed the curtains.

"Now, why would you want to do that?"

Candy jumped at the familiar voice behind her. She turned around and saw a man sitting on her bed. She couldn’t tell who it was, as the shadows were on his face. The man had his legs crossed and his hands rested on the bed. Candy took two steps forward to get a closer look at the man. She was only able to see his lips while his bangs covered his eyes. Those lips! So familiar and irresistible. The man stood up and walked over to Candy. His face was now visible…his sandy colored hair was nicely combed. His wonderful blue eyes shined with the little light there was in the room. His skin was a milky color…Anthony…

"But…you’re d-dead," Candy choked out.

"I am, I’m here in your dreams," he answered. "This will be the only place we’re going to be able to see each other."

"Anthony!" Candy threw herself into his arms; tears ran down her cheeks.

"My sweet Candy," Anthony whispered in her ear and hugged her back. "Candy, why haven’t you eaten anything?" He asked walking towards the food that Archie left her.

"I’m not hungry," she whispered.

"Why won’t you go out and have fun?"

"Because it brings back painful memories," she answered.

"Candy…you must let me go," he said taking her hands in his.

"How can I? You are always in my mind. I love you! I love you…and I can’t change that," Candy cried out.

Anthony rubbed the tear away from her cheek. "I know that, and I love you too…but you are still alive and young. You have a whole life in front of you and you cannot let that die. Life has to go on…your life, without me."

"But…it’s hard, I can’t take you out of my mind!" Candy threw her arms around Anthony’s neck and pulled him closer. "I love you," and she kissed him. Anthony pulled away, breaking Candy’s heart.

"Candy, I’m not asking you to forget about me. I am asking you to be happy and to live your life as best you can."

Candy nodded and looked down at the floor. "Then, I promise you that I’ll do what you ask me to do."

Anthony smiled at her and lifted her chin up. "And you must start by doing that with clothes on," he said.

Candy blushed and looked back down at the floor. She forgot that she was only wearing her undergarment.

"Don’t worry about it my freckled face," Anthony teased. Candy looked up at him and smiled.

"Anthony, hold me…please?" Candy asked. He obediently took her in his arms and closed his eyes. Candy smiled at the warmth of his body against hers. After a while, they looked at each other and kissed. Their kiss was passionate at fist, but then it became fierce. They showed one another on how much they felt for each other. Anthony began to kiss her neck, going down. Candy closed her eyes and fell on top of her bed, pulling Anthony with her. Perhaps they made love to each other. Well…at least in their dreams they did. Candy opened her eyes and saw that she was alone. She had wakened up from her dream. A dream that she’ll never forget.

Candy got up and drew back the curtains. Light hit the room in the matter of seconds. Candy walked towards the table and sat down on the chair. She picked up the fork and began to eat. As she ate, she looked down at the floor and saw a white rose. She picked it up and noticed that there was a message tied around the hem. She opened it and read:

"My love, I am happy that I had a chance to show you how much you meant to me. Please, don’t forget about me. I will always love you and be there for you. Love, Anthony."

This brought Candy a huge smile on her face. She kissed the rose and held it to her heart. "I love you too, Anthony."
