Happy Birthday Freckles
Terry turned around the old oak tree sure to find her there like he always does around this time of day. Classes had been over for hours, at least for him since he skipped the whole afternoon to go take a nap in his room. The air was cool and scented and surprisingly calming. Everything had become a lot calmer since he met her.
-Hey Freckles! Whatís with the sad face?
She didnít move; said nothing just kept her gaze at the sun slowly getting lower into the horizon. He sat quietly next to her and gave her a little shoulder bump. She just breathed out loudly to acknowledge his presence.
-Hey monkey freckled face, is that all you got to offer?
She turned her head to face him; frowned and turned back to stare at whatever was in front of her. She joined her hands together and slumped against the tree trunk. Her voice was soft.
-We used to celebrate together, celebrate the day we were found and now she wonít even talk to me. We wouldnít do much because we didnít have much but we always used to hold on to each other, saying that weíd always have one another.
-Iím not sure I follow you Freckle.
-Now Iím really alone Terry, if I donít have her I have nothing.
-Tsk, tsk and what am I? Chopped liver?
-Oh leave me alone Terry, what do you know about being abandoned and celebrating birthdays alone?
-So this is where youíre wrong Freckles, I know plenty about that!
Terry got up, annoyed and frustrated, ready to snap at her again until he saw her wipe a tear away on her cheek. Silently. No sobs. He sat back down and got his matchbox out of his pocket. He lighted a match and held it in front of her face.
-Go ahead Candy, make a wish!
They looked at each other while the flame burned the little wooden stick, she couldnít keep her eyes off of him. He looked beautiful. Until she saw a glimpse of pain in those beautiful eyes of his.
The dying match had burned his skin and he took his hurt finger to his mouth which made him look like a five year old boy. Her gaze was soft and her smile compassionate.
-You didnít even make a wish Candy. I got burned for nothing.
She took his burned finger to her lips and gave it a sweet kiss.
-Oh I got pretty much what I wanted. Not to be alone for my birthday.
She turned around and leaned against him; he wrapped his arms around her and they continued to watch the sunset.
-Happy Birthday Freckles.
