A Candy and Terry Halloween Story
Candy was seated on the grass, next to her was Terrence. It was a lovely autumn day and a light wind was blowing on the hill. The light was not so strong anymore since days had shorten a great deal already and the afternoon was bordering on evening. She loved staying that way with Terry, they used to spend many afternoons like that without doing very much, just being there, enjoying their mutual presence, sometimes talking, sometimes reading and sometimes simply being close to each other. It was usually during such moments that Candy used to spy on him. When he was not looking at her she indulged looking at him. His handsome profile, the light twinkling in his gaze, so serene and relaxed, when he didn’t think of being observed, his long chestnut hair waving like grass in the gentle breeze! She never got tired of examining all these details of the person she had come to love so dearly. Sometimes she had caught him doing the same with her, when she was not looking, and what she had been able to catch in that rapt gaze of his, in those instants lasting between her noticing and his lowering his eyes..had . ...well... scared her a little bit! Terrence seemed different in those instants, maybe it was just a trick of the light or “my eyes must be playing tricks on me!” she had thought embarrassed, but the fact remained that Terry stare at her had something disquieting in it almost ferine. It could have been easily described like the gaze of someone who was watching something edible and even more, delicious, probably the same way a predator might have stared at the perfect prey. This was at times a creepy sensation, moreover in those moments she had felt to be glued to his gaze almost hypnotized and incapable to divert her own, hadn’t been him to lower his eyes first.
Terrence turned his head on his right to see Candy, “What are you looking at?” He asked. “Well, at you! ” She would have responded, instead she watched his right hand, and said “your ring!” Since she had known him, Terrence had always worn, on the ring finger, alternatively of his right or left hand, a ring with a big blue stone, baring a G intertwined with the Grandchester’s family crest. Actually to be honest it was not very beautiful and quite flashy and apparently not very precious either. Candy had often asked herself why would he insist in keeping wearing it but had never dared to ask. “My ring? And do you like it Freckles?” asked Terry with a crooked smile lingering on his lips. “I don’t know, it is a little bit gaudy! Don’t you think? What is it, the blue stone I mean?” continued Candy. “It is a lapis lazuli” answered Terrence who had kept staring at his fingers too. “It is not very precious it is just a silver ring, but it used to belong to my great great-grandfather, to whom was given by a Romanian Prince, who hosted him in his castle in Romania when my ancestor Edmund Grandchester went there as ambassador for his majesty the king of England.”
“Just silver and Lapis Lazuli, the Prince had not been very generous! Couldn’t he have given him something made of gold with emeralds or diamonds? ”Asked Candy perplexed. Terrence burst out laughing, “..of course Freckles, he could most certainly have, but you see, this is a magic ring, much more precious and useful to Edmund of any other golden ring his highness might have given him!” Candy took Terrence right hand into hers, it was incredibly cold, nonetheless beautiful, elegant, with long well shaped fingers, the hand of a pianist, for sure. While keeping his hand in hers she started examining the ring closely. “I can’t see anything special in it! What do you mean by magic, are you pulling my leg as you usually do, Terry?” She was starting getting annoyed with this attitude of his to always tease her . “Not at all, I’m not making fun of you, I’m simply telling you the truth! But this is a secret Candy and if I tell you, you must promise not to spill the beans about it to any living soul, can you swear, you won’t do it?” Terrence had turned serious and was looking at her so intensely that Candy felt her mouth go dry and could not utter a single word but she simply nodded with her head, signalling that she had understood. “Well then..” Started Terry, and with a deep sigh went on saying “ When Edmund Grandchester was there, guest of the Prince in Romania, he discovered that his host was a creature of the darkness, a monster who prey on human’s blood. You must know that my ancestor was an handsome young man of 25 at the time, and... I don’t know how to put it... well...you know the prince fell for him, for his vigour, his youth, his....blood and one night he entered in his bedroom and attacked him in his sleep. The day after, when he saw Edmund again he felt guilty of what he had down the previous night and begged the young lord of going away immediately because, he had succumbed ones to his instinct and couldn’t guarantee to not repeating his dreadful act again. Edmund quickly packed his things and was ready to go with his hands already on the door, when the prince stopped him. “ You can’t go before I have given you this”. It is a ring and I had it made especially for you, you must wear it during day time to protect yourself from sunrays, because since last night you have become like me, a ....vampire! “ Terrence stopped talking and looked at Candy, “Did I shocked you, Freckles?” he asked. Candy was waiting for him to burst into a laughter or to wink to her or any other sign that this was a kind of joke, but nothing of the sort happened. Terrence was now holding Candy’s hand with a strange expression of longing on his face that she could hardly decipher. Then he smiled at her...”All right, I see that you don’t believe me, do you?” He asked her. “Well Terry, I must admit that this is an amazing story, actually the most extraordinary I’ve ever heard, and I know that today is Halloween and you think it is the perfect horror story for you to tell me, but I don’t know... the fact is that, you seem to believe to it, and honestly, I can’t imagine how you can believe to such things as.... Vampires.” Candy remains there with this questioningly look on her face. “Very well freckles, I have, after all, a real talent for acting or so it seems, since I made you believe that I truly believe in this vampire story!!!” Said Terrence grinning.
At this point Candy relaxed and punched Terrence on the chest, “Wow, I hurt my hand as if I punched a piece of rock!!!!” she thought and with a reproachful look on her face said “ Oh for Heaven sake, will you ever stopped joking. I was very concerned that you could believe such horrible stories, and you were just pretending again, weren’t you!!! I totally hate you Terry!” Said Candy buy could not prevent herself from smiling. “ No you don’t hate me at all Candy, you know perfectly well that your feelings for me are quite the opposite, you like me very much, but don’t worry Freckles, I like you too!” Reposted Terrence.
“Oh really...so why don’t you give me your ring now, I’d like to try it on?” Asked Candy and in so doing tried to make the ring slip off his finger. ”No!!!” Shouted Terrence, “ What are you doing!” he pushed Candy away and got on his feet watching at her with an angry look. “ But Terry??? There is no reason for you to be so sensitive, I wouldn’t ruin it, and anyway you can keep it, for what I care!!!!...” Candy was astonished and resented his reaction. “ She could not believe her own eyes, in front of her Terry had gone glacial and his white, almost marble-like complexion, “How could I have not noticed how white he is????” started changing when little by little minute veins started appearing around his eyes and pervading his smooth cheeks. But all of it lasted a flickering second because, in a blink of Candy’s eyes everything was gone and Terrence was his handsome self again.
“I’m sorry Candy!” said he “I don’t know what came over me..will you?.....shall we....dance? He asked and extended with a gallant gesture his arm toward her! Candy, at first, didn’t know what to do, but couldn’t ignore Terry’s outstretched hand, so accepted the offer. He took her by the hand and, without any effort whatsoever he lifted her into his arms just as if she was made of feathers. Candy felt like she was flying, they turned, he made her twirling, holding her strongly and making her feeling almost like she wasn’t touching the ground at all. Candy was totally enraptured. His penetrating gaze was chaining her eyes to his.
“My god his eyes are so blue...so beautiful, so...red?...Oh..I can’t stop looking, oh Terry... your lips are so red and swollen....and you’re teeth... so sharp, I .....I ... have never noticed before,.... they are so white and pointed.. ” Candy’s mind had gone completely blank, while Terry’s grip on her was taking her breath away.
Then all of a sudden Terry’s stopped and she literally crashed on his marble chest. “Terry, why have you stopped?” she asked. Terrence didn’t answer, he went on looking her directly to the eye while tightening his grip on her body. They couldn’t be closer than that, glued to each other, Candy could distinctly smell his scent, a perfume, sweet, pleasant like a fragrance of daffodils. Who kept enthralling her, and almost ecstatic, she eventually let go! She totally succumbed, while his face came closer and closer to hers, his lips parted ......... a terrible, desperate cry was heard coming from the hill, in the twilight of that 31th of October.
Happy Halloween my Dear Freckles!
