A Happy Candy Ending
by Kim Hae Sung

Two years have passed by and they have all matured as well, gaining knowledge about happiness and sorrow in life. One smiles about memories that feel far away, but not quite far.
Candy was still working hard as a nurse, commuting from Pony’s Home. Once in a
while she heard from the gang-- Archie, Annie, Patty, and Albert. But other
than news from them, her life had not changed dramatically.
That
winter, Archie and the gang brought news of Terry, who had been in a car
accident and was in critical condition.
Candy,
who trained herself to be dull where it concerned Terry, began trembling.
“Oh
Terry!”
“Is
she going to be okay?” asked Annie, worrying.
“Let’s
go see Terry, Candy. This may be the last chance to see him, don’t you think?”
“Patty!”
“Is it because of Susanna? I bet she’d understand as well. Do not worry about her and let’s get going. We are concerned, too!”
“Archie, but!”
“Yes, perhaps she will understand, will she not?”
Candy’sface
turned white like the rose Sweet Candy as she spoke.
“Hey,
Candy. Can you hear me?”
“Oh God, Candy!”
Candy had passed out and Annie and Patty felt desperate.
“I’ll go get the doctor, Annie. Patty, please look after Candy!”
The doctor arrived shortly after and announced that Candy had fainted in
distress and recommended absolute rest for Candy.
“I
feel for you Candy,” consoled Patty who knew what it felt like to have lost the
one you loved the most.
“Everyone should take a rest yourselves. Candy will be fine.” Miss Pony
recommended everyone to move to the other room, so Candy could rest.
Terry, who had been admitted to a hospital in New
York,
was still unconscious while Susanna, who had not left Terry’ side for one bit,
was in tears.
“Oh,
Terry, my Terry,” sobbed Susanna.
Terry, however, did not seem to hear her.
“Oh
mother, will Terry ever wake up? What will I do if he doesn’t?”
“He will be okay, Susanna.”
“Terry!”
Susanna
continued to guard Terry at his side at all times.
“Susanna,
you should get some rest or you will pass out yourself,” Susanna’s mother said
with concern.
“Mother, I’ll be okay when he is okay,” replied Susanna who looked at Terry carefully and quietly.
Mrs. Marlowe left Susanna with Terry, deciding her daughter would not listen to
her now.
“Oh,
Terry it has been days since the accident, but you are still unconscious! Will
you please regain consciousness for me? Please!” Susanna begged in desperation
and sorrow.
“Can...dy...”
Slowly and painfully Terry spoke.
Susanna
looked carefully to see if Terry had woken up, but he still seemed unconscious.
Susanna was saddened.
“Terry, it has been so long, but…” Susanna’s sadness was indescribable.
“I
guess I have been extremely selfish. To me, Terry is more important than my leg
or my own self, but I have made him suffer again. It was enough. Terry has done
his best. Oh, my Terry!”
Mrs. Marlowe walked into the room and saw her daughter in tears.
“You
are crying again, are you okay?”
“Yes, mother.”
“Terry will be just fine. You should not worry. Will you stop worrying about it, Susanna?”
“Mother, I think I will let Terry go when he gets better,” Susanna spoke quietly and word by word. “I think I made him suffer enough. I will let him go. That will make him happy and it would be the best for myself as well.”
“What are you talking about, Susanna? You are talking nonsense!”
“I
now have realized that keeping Terry only made him suffer. He would never be
happy with me. I thought it would get better as time went by, but I was wrong.
He was nice to me, but his heart was not with me. I am happy as long as he is
happy.”
“Are you sure, Susanna? Are you going to be okay?”
“Yes, mother. It will help me better if he is happier. Thanks mother, for
understanding.” Susanna’s voice sounded brighter.
Candy has regained her consciousness, but decided not to go see Terry.
“I’m
sure Susanna is taking care of Terry very well. She will look after him just
fine,” said Candy in her heart, praying for Terry’s wellness.
The next Spring, Terry had gotten better and was now back in acting again,
thinking of the letter Susanna had left him.
“Terry, please take care of yourself and be happy. The true happiness for you is the real happiness for me. Your warm heart will always be remembered in my heart. I am leaving for a new life with my mother.
Good-bye, my Terry.
Sincerely yours, Susanna”
Terry
was confused and was not sure of what to do, but he tried his best not to show
it. He was going to concentrate on his acting now.
“To
give the audience the best performance is my dream and life.”
Everything was back to normal and one day Albert came to visit at Pony’s Home.
“Hey, Albert!” Candy ran and hugged him in joy of seeing him.
“Hi,
Candy, I’ve missed you.”
“Welcome! How is everyone and everything? I missed you dearly too!”
“Why didn’t you come by then? I bet you weren’t as busy as I was, were you?”
“Sorry, I promise I’ll go see you next time.”
“How would you like to go to New York for a visit, Candy?”
“New York?”
“Yeah
I have to go there for business to host an event and was wondering if you were
willing to come along.”
“Well, I kind of want to go, but…”
“Well, then. You are coming with me. You have to do something as a part of the Audleys, you know? Ms. Candice White Audley,” smiled Albert.
“Fine, Mr. William. I’ll go with you.”
“Good girl. I’ll come and pick you up, Ms. Candice White Audley.”
“See you then, Mr. William.”
On Christmas Eve, Albert and Candy were heading to
New York.
“What’s
on your mind, Candy?”
“Nothing, really,” replied Candy, but that was not true. She was unable to take her mind off Terry. Long ago, she had headed to New York just to see Terry perform. Going back there would be a painful reminder to her.
“Candy, you must be thinking of Terry, aren’t you?”
“I am, but it is only a memory now. I’m okay,” smiled Candy.
“How would you like to go see Terry perform afterwards?”
“Sorry?”
“I’ve already reserved a couple of tickets and I have never seen him perform myself. He is also a friend of mine, too, you know.”
“That’s true. He worried about you a lot when you had lost your memory.”
“It’s okay, Candy. We’ll only go see the play. I’m thrilled to see him
performing, to be honest.”
After the event Albert went to Candy to let her know that it was almost time
for the play.
Thank
you for everything today. I know you are tired, but I would very much like to
go see my friend perform. Chances like this don’t come by that often, you know?”
Candy herself wanted to go see Terry perform.
“I guess seeing the play is okay,” Candy comforted herself, but she could not
stop her heart beating so fast.
Eleanor Baker, Terry’s mother, was at the place as well to watch her son
perform.
She noticed that her son was enthusiastic.
“Terry,
your performance is better than any other day.”
As a mother, she could sense that her son was truly happy doing what he was
good at doing. The play ended successfully and the audience was amazed.
“Terry, you have made it finally.” Candy was proud of Terry.
“Terry’s
performance was great! We would have missed this great performance!”
“Yes, Albert. It was great and I thank you.”
“You’re very welcome, Ms. Audley.”
Candy only felt that it was a great performance because Terry was in it, but
could not say so.
“Shall
we get going, Albert?”
“Sure, but before we go, I have to get something. Can you please wait for me at the hall?”
“Okay, I’ll meet you at the hall.”
During his performance Terry had noticed Candy in the audience and ran to the seat right after the play and saw Candy’s back from a distance.
“Candy!”
Candy turned to see Terry running towards her and was brightened, but could not
stop thinking of Susanna. She stopped herself from greeting him cheerfully and
began running away from him.
“I’m
sorry, Terry. I cannot face you. I’m not allowed.”
Terry, who did not want to let go of Candy this time, ran even faster after
Candy.
“Wait
up, Candy!” Terry grabbed Candy by her waist and kept her in his arms. “I have
realized that I can never be happy without you in my life. And you as well!”
“Terry, but Susanna is…”
Candy
was unable to speak any longer for Terry’s lips were on hers. She could feel
his tears along on her cheeks. She knew how he felt.
They
stood there hugging each other as if time has stopped without noticing Albert
standing by.
“I
hate to interrupt, but everyone is looking at you two. Perhaps you guys would
rather go someplace else, I suggest?”
Candy’s face was covered with happiness.
“Yes, you are right, Albert. Everyone, I would like to introduce the love of my
life, Candice White Audley!” Terry let the world know that Candy was his and
the world has blessed them both.
Terry invited Candy and Albert to his place.
“I
went to look for you, Terry, to let you know that Candy was here.”
“I appreciate that, Albert. You are always very helpful.”
“I’m also very thankful to Candy who is a great nurse. She has saved my life. Ha ha.”
“Oh you are funny, Albert,” Candy joked, then turned to Terry. “How is Susanna?”
“Candy!”
“Candy, Susanna has left Terry for him and herself. It’s been a while,” replied Albert for Terry.
“I’m sorry, Candy, for not coming to see you right away. I wasn’t too sure of myself.”
“Oh, Terry!”
“Then I received this letter from Susanna recently. Read it if you like.”
Candy
began reading the letter from Susanna.
“My dearest Terry,
How are you doing? I’m doing just fine. At the beginning, I thought I would die
without you, but now I’m used to not having you by my side. I’m practicing on
walking these days and Dr. Thomas is helping me a lot with it. He is a very
kind person. To be honest with you, Dr. Thomas reminds me of you quite a lot.
His warm smile and thoughtful voice are just like yours. At first I thought he
was you. That is how much he reminds me of you. You can guess how much he and
you look alike.
Terry, please do not worry about me. Dr. Thomas has proposed to me and I have
accepted it. I thank you for providing me the chance to meet him. Please send
my regards to Candice White Audley. I will not thank her or apologize to her
ever again since she would understand how I feel.
Take care of yourself and be happy.
You are always in my prayers.
Sincerely, Susanna”
Candy
was in tears.
“What’s
wrong, Candy?” asked Terry.
“I’m so thankful to Susanna and I’m very happy.”
“Oh, Candy,” Terry hugged Candy warmly. “I will never let you go again.”
Albert
left Terry’s apartment and began walking away from it
At Terry’s mansion, Candy and Terry were sitting in front of the fireplace,
just like the old days.
“How would you like to spend the night, Miss Freckles?”
“You asked me the same question then,” smiled Candy.
“Oh,
did I?” Terry kept Candy in his arms warmly and softly.
Those
two were happy, just like that.
“Have
I asked you, Candy?”
“What?”
“Miss Freckles, what name would you consider giving our child?” whispered Terry in Candy’s ears.
“You dirty old fart!”
Terry looked at Candy who had fallen asleep and began kissing her softly on her
forehead, cheeks, and lips.
