The Genealogy of the Ardlay Family (アードレー家の系図)

Ardlay Family Tree #1

Genealogy chart from Candy Candy Reborn, based on the original Candy Candy Novels and the Appendix "Nakayoshi Manga Shinbun" in the Nakayoshi magazine (June 1977)

(graphic family tree by Itomaru)

  • The chart follows the schema of the original Ardlay family tree in the appendix of Nakayoshi Manga Shinbun (June, 1977). However, Mr. Brian's deceased wife has been added to the chart. Great Aunt Elroy is shown as the SECOND wife of Mr. Brian (unclear if it's his first or last name). He and his first wife (deceased) had a daughter (name unknown). This daughter had an only child, Sarah, who married Mr. Lagan.
  • The Lagans, Eliza and Neal are related to the Ardlays through marriage, not blood.
  • Sarah Lagan is the step-granddaughter of Great Aunt Elroy, making her children Eliza and Neal, Great Aunt Elroy's step-great-grandchildren.
  • Albert has only one sister, Rosemary Brown.
  • Janice Cornwell is Albert's first blood-related cousin, making her sons, Archie and Stair his cousins, once-removed.
  • Sarah Lagan is the daughter of an unknown first cousin (by marriage), making her Albert's first cousin, once removed. Her children, Eliza, and Neil are therefore Albert's first cousins, twice -removed.
  • As the children of first cousins, Candy and Anthony would be considered second cousins to Archie and Stair. However, Anthony would be Candy's first cousin, by adoption, since his mother is Candy's aunt, Rosemary.
  • Archie and Stair are the grand-nephews of Great Aunt Elroy, since their mother Janice, was her niece, the daughter of her sister Janet.

Ardlay Family Tree #2

Genealogy chart from Peko's CC site, based on the  Appendix "Nakayoshi Manga Shinbun" in the Nakayoshi magazine (June 1977)

(graphic family tree from Peko)

  • This chart follows the schema of the original Ardlay family tree in the appendix of Nakayoshi Manga Shinbun (June, 1977), except the identity of Candy's adoptive father is marked "アルバート"(Albert) instead of "ウィリアム A アードレー" (William A. Ardlay). Albert's father is labeled as  "ウィリアム" (Willam), without the middle and surname.
  • According to Peko, the "O" in the family tree normally signifies a "female" in the Japanese genealogy.
  • There was a confusion as to Sarah's parentage, but it was never cleared up by the author. Mizuki had stated in her essay that Sarah had a "secret of birth".
  • One fan theory suggested that the "O" might be Brian's sister (as depicted in the tree) and not his offspring. This relationship further distances the Lagan family from the Ardlay family.
  • If Mr. Brian is Sarah Lagan's granduncle (instead of her grandfather), then Great Aunt Elroy would be her grandaunt (by marriage).

Ardlay Family Tree #3

Genealogy chart from Misaki's CC site, based on the  Appendix "Nakayoshi Manga Shinbun" in the Nakayoshi magazine (June 1977)

(graphic family tree by Misaki)

  • This chart is a faithful replica of the original Ardlay family tree in the appendix of Nakayoshi Manga Shinbun (June, 1977). The only difference is Candy's full name キャンディス W アードレー -- Candice W. Ardlay is noted instead of simply "Candy" in the original version.
  • The "O" appears to be directly issued from Mr. Brian and not as a result of his marriage with Great Aunt Elroy. Although not depicted, it suggests there was second wife and their offspring "O" produced a daughter, Sarah Lagan.
  • Misaki noticed a difference in Albert's father, William Ardlay's middle name. In the Nakayoshi 1977 issue, his middle name starts with an "H" and not a "C", as written in the Candy Candy novels (1990), Vol. 3, pg. 212. Albert's father is also mentioned as "William C. Ardlay" in Candy Candy Final Story (2010), Vol 2, pgs. 296-304. In the Candy Candy novels (1979), Vol.3, pg. 171, Albert does not mention a middle name for his father. He was simply "William Ardlay".
